How to Hang Wallpaper

Wallpaper 101: How the Pros Do It

WALLPAPER 101

1. Find center of wall and mark it

2. Measure out how with the roll how many sections you will be doing on the wall.

3. Measure from center point of wall where the first side of your wallpaper will start. Hang plum from that spot and let settle straight down

4. Use string line to mark a straight line to guide your first piece, being careful not to move/bump the plum as you go down.  Remove plum

5. Pre-measure first piece of wallpaper.  Cut at bottom

6. Depending on your type of wallpaper, prepare the wall (glue).  Make sure glue covers ENTIRE strip where wallpaper will go and extends out both sides.

7. Place piece of wallpaper on wall, making sure it is perfectly in line with your line.  Start at the top and ensure both edges stick to the wall.  Lift and re-apply paper as necessary.

8. Using a smoothing tool, smooth out wallpaper piece starting from the middle and moving downwards in a V shape (two movements).  Lift and re-apply paper as necessary to keep alignment.

9. Once paper is perfectly aligned and in place, use a straight edge and a new razorblade to cut the top, and then the bottom lines.

10. Repeat steps 7-10 for each piece of wallpaper on either side of your anchor piece.  Ensure there is no gap between pieces. A hair of an overlap is preferred over a gap in case there is settling of the home.  On the outer edge pieces you will need to cut top, bottom, and sides,  Use the same process as above, but be careful when cutting  the corners.  You can always cut more in, but you can’t take back a cut that was too far to start.

Happy hanging!
